LIFE LINES
Artist Statement
Life Lines is a new series of small artworks 11 x 14 inches on heavy weight mixed media paper, using acrylics and mixed media and drawing materials. I work spontaneously by building up layers of paint which provides a background where lines are interwoven, buried and then reappear again, often joined in unpredictable ways. Each step of the way I respond to what is in front of me using my intuition to guide me.
Over the years, I have been enamored with line as an evocative metaphor for my life’s journey. Nothing in my life has gone as planned and my life has been anything but a smooth and straight line. All of its twists and turns has given me a depth of being and much richness to draw upon when facing life’s challenges.
I am reminded of this poem by Walt Whitman:
“Not I, nor anyone else, can travel that road for you.
You must travel it by yourself.
Perhaps you have been on it since you were born, and did not know.
Perhaps it is everywhere - on water and on land.”
